USA.

Zero TV spend. Four unknown YouTubers. One stateside launch nobody expected to land.

Of all the country launches I spearheaded — China, UK, India, Mexico, Brazil — OYO's stateside foray will always stay with me.

The playbook for launching a hotel brand in America was well established, and expensive. National TV. Airport takeovers. Highway billboards. A campaign budget in the eight-figures range just to get the brand's name into the country's consciousness. And OYO was launching against Airbnb, Marriott, and every regional motel chain that had been on the ground for decades.

We had a fraction of the budget. So we did something different.

Zero TV spend. Instead, we picked four newly minted YouTube influencers — sassy but genuinely unknown netizens, the kind of people who might actually stay at an OYO if left to their own devices — and gave them free run across US cities.

Their brief was simple: go bunk at OYOs. Do whatever you'd normally do. Film it. Post it. Their days, nights, and general shenanigans became the kickstart content for our US YouTube channel — and got the brand cultural credibility with a Snap-happy audience who wouldn't have watched a TV spot even if we'd bought one.

The influencer series. The complete YouTube playlist from the launch — the content that seeded OYO's US channel and gave the brand its first American audience.

We gave four unknown netizens a chance to record their shenanigans across US cities.

The influencers weren't famous — that was the point. Famous creators come pre-loaded with reasons the audience distrusts what they're saying. Unknown ones, given real access and no script, produced content that felt authentic because it was. The audience got early to something. The brand got associated with the discovery.

The campaign didn't try to compete with the established American hotel brands on their turf. It ceded that turf and built its own — one that the incumbents couldn't easily follow into without looking like they were trying too hard.

Frugal, effective, and — critically — repeatable. The playbook this launch developed became the template for how OYO entered new markets afterward.
